Accessories Required for Access
|
In addition
to a personal computer you will need a phone line. You may use your own home phone
line, but keep in mind that you cannot use your telephone line for phone calls while you
are connected to the Internet. A second phone line for your modem might be more
advantageous. |
Which brings
us to another necessity, a modem - the faster the better. If speed on the Internet
is a big consideration for you, you may want to consider an ISDN line if one is available
in your neighborhood. ISDN lines are much faster than your home phone modem, but it is
separate from your phone line and may come at significant cost. |
And, of
course, you will need an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or an
Online Service. The ISP will probably be a local service, which is closer, but they
may require you to set up and configure your own network connection, so if you are a babe
in the woods as far as computers are concerned, your best bet is an Online Service which
is pretty much "plug and play". No matter which you choose, you may want to
choose a flat-rate or unlimited use fee - JUST IN CASE you find yourself hooked on being
Online.
